Various repairs I have completed and often causes and remedy included. Be sure to check back often

Dell

Compaq HP Averatec Gateway Toshiba Sony
HP zd7000

Blown part by liquid short.

After cleaning to see what the damage was. I found that U5 chip had shorted and blown the leg off, as well as pad and trace.

Since this was a relatively new laptop the replacement part was very difficult to find. The part number was scorched from the IC and illegible.

The probable liquid:
Tap Water - notice the mineral deposits (white colored ash residue).

With U5 removed and area cleaned you can better see how the short blew the pad and the trace away. Which pitted the phenolic fiber of the board. Will require a bridge wire where trace is open. And removal of coating over trace (right of R30 print on board) to access the copper.
